2. bread, cereals, breakfast cereals

These foods have a particularly high value within the child nutrition. At least half of the cereal products should be whole grain products. Since the outer layers and the germ of the grain contain a particularly large number of vitamins (B vitamins) and minerals (magnesium, iron), dietary fibres, proteins and important essential fatty acids, whole grain products are very valuable and make an important contribution to the healthy nutrition of our children and adolescents.Ground flour (Type 405) and products made from it contain much less important nutrients than wholemeal flour.

The degree of milling is equivalent to the type designation and the higher the type number of the flour (for example Type 1050), the more important nutrients it contains. Wholemeal flour is complete (contains all outer layers and the germ bud) and has no type designation. Whole grain bread can contain whole grains and can also be baked from finely ground grain.

Wholemeal flour can also be added to the ground flour (for example, in pancake dough or pizza dough), which makes it easier to get used to the new taste. So-called multigrain breads are mostly breads made from ready-made baking mixtures with a high proportion of ground flour. Breakfast cereals (breakfast cereals), for example cornflakes, are usually highly processed products and the impression is created that these products are particularly healthy and part of an optimal diet.

Unfortunately, these breakfast cereals no longer have much to do with the original cereal but contain little fiber and all the more sugar. Vitamins are usually added. These foods are rather to be regarded as sweets.

Ideal for breakfast are whole grain cereals (oat flakes, wheat flakes, wheat germs) with milk or yogurt and fresh fruit. Ready-made muesli mixtures are also possible, but they should not contain added sugar. A muesli can be sweetened better with a little liquid honey.

Attention! Sugar often appears in the list of ingredients under other names like sucrose, glucose syrup or glucose, fructose, maltodextrin). Children should never leave the house without breakfast and if they don’t want to eat anything at all, they should at least drink a cup of milk or cocoa and take a healthy snack with them.
