Thrombosis: Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Skin and subcutaneous (L00-L99).

  • Acrodermatitis atrophicans – skin disease secondary to Lyme disease infection.

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Acute arterial occlusion
  • Vascular spasm
  • Lymphangitis (inflammation of the lymphatic vessels)
  • Lymphedema – storage of lymph fluid in the tissue.
  • Muscle fiber tear
  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (pAVK) – progressive narrowing or occlusion of the arteries supplying the arms/ (more commonly) legs, usually due to atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis, hardening of the arteries).
  • Postthrombotic syndrome – chronic congestion of blood returning to the heart as a result of thrombosis.
  • Raynaud’s syndromecirculatory disorders of the hands or feet.
  • Thrombangiitis obliterans (synonyms: endarteritis obliterans, Winiwarter-Buerger disease, Von Winiwarter-Buerger disease, thrombangitis obliterans) – vasculitis (vascular disease) associated with recurrent (recurring) arterial and venous thrombosis (blood clot (thrombus) in a blood vessel); symptoms: Exercise-induced pain, acrocyanosis (blue discoloration of body appendages), and trophic disturbances (necrosis/tissue damage resulting from cell death and gangrene of fingers and toes in advanced stages); more or less symmetrical occurrence; young patients (< 45 years).
  • Thrombophlebitis (phlebitis).

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Baker’s cyst (popliteal: belonging to the popliteal fossa); popliteal cyst) – cysts usually become symptomatic only between the 20th and 40th year of life; however, they can also be observed already in the 1st decade of life; symptomatology: feeling of pressure in the area of the popliteal fossa with occasional radiation into the calf.
  • Degenerative joint changes such as osteoarthritis.
  • Gout attack
  • Lumboischialgia – back pain that also radiates to the legs.
  • Rheumatism
  • Spinal stenosis – narrowing of the spinal canal.

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Posttraumatic swelling – after injury.
