Products
Abametapir was approved in the United States in 2020 as an emulsion for external use (Xeglyze).
Structure and properties
Abametapir (C12H12N2, Mr = 184.24 g/mol) consists of two molecules of methylpyridine covalently bonded together. The active ingredient is present as an oil-in-water emulsion.
Effects
Abametapir has insecticidal and ovicidal properties, meaning it kills both aphids and their eggs. The effects are based on inhibition of metalloproteases by complexation of metal ions such as iron, copper, and zinc. Among other things, this prevents hatching from the eggs.
Indications
For the treatment of infestation with head lice from 6 months of age.
Dosage
According to the professional information. The bottle is shaken immediately before use. The emulsion is massaged into the hair and onto the scalp. After a contact time of 10 minutes, it is washed out. Hands are then washed with soap and water. Unlike other louse products, the application is made once without repetition.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
The emulsion must not be ingested. Full precautions can be found in the drug information leaflet.
Interactions
Abametapir is an inhibitor of CYP3A4, CYP2B6, and CYP1A2, and corresponding drug-drug interactions are possible.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include redness, a rash, burning sensation, contact dermatitis, vomiting, eye irritation, pruritus, and hair color changes.
