Abdominal Mass: Medical History

Family history (medical history) is an important component in the diagnosis of resistance in the abdomen.

Family history

  • Are there any diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in your family that are common?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Did you feel the resistance in the abdomen* yourself? When?
  • Do you often feel bloated after eating?
  • Do you have a feeling of pain/pressure in your mid/lower abdomen? If so, where exactly?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • When did you last have a bowel movement?
  • Do you have any discomfort during bowel movements?
  • Have you noticed blood buildup* or mucus buildup on your stool?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Have you noticed any unwanted change in body weight?
  • Has there been any change in your appetite?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars, or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (gastrointestinal diseases, liver and biliary diseases, tumor diseases).

  • Allergies
