Abdominal pain weeks/months after caesarean section

Abdominal pain can last for several weeks or a few months after a Caesarean section. This is completely normal. As a rule, however, the pain becomes increasingly weaker and should, depending on how well the surgical wounds heal, almost disappear after a maximum of 2 months.

However, if those affected suffer from certain pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, healing may take longer. If the abdominal pain does not subside for months, even increases in intensity or occurs together with other symptoms such as fever and vaginal bleeding, this is an indication of a serious cause and should be clarified as soon as possible. A common cause of recurrent abdominal pain several months after a Caesarean section is adhesions in the abdomen.

They can arise due to irritation during the operation and, in addition to pain, can lead to symptoms such as infertility or disturbances in intestinal passage. If the abdominal pain is related to menstruation, but is different in character or intensity from a possible known menstrual pain, the migration of uterine lining into the uterine wall, known as “endometriosis“, could be responsible for the pain. In rare cases a so-called “chronic postoperative pain” occurs.

It describes pain after an operation that lasts longer than 3 months and whose cause cannot be clearly determined. The only therapy here is pain-relieving treatment with medication.
