Abdominal pain weeks to months after birth

If abdominal pain does not reappear until weeks or even months after birth, it can usually no longer be associated with the previous birth event. Possible causes can therefore be internal or gynaecological. It should be noted that abdominal pain can be a sign of the first period bleeding after birth and lactation for a long time after birth.

To be on the safe side, abdominal pain of unclear cause should be presented to a doctor. Mild abdominal pain after birth is normal, especially in the context of uterine regression – as a rule, this is felt slightly cramping in the entire lower abdomen. If other symptoms occur in addition to the abdominal pain, if they are particularly severe or strictly localised on one side, one should not shy away from going to the doctor in order to recognise possible pathological changes in the puerperium in good time.

In the same way, abdominal pains long after birth, i.e. after the postpartum period (after approx. 6 weeks), always require clarification, as they can no longer be pain during the regression of pregnancy, but rather other internal and gynaecological causes.
