Abnormal Weight Gain

Abnormal weight gain or weight gain (ICD-10-GM R 63.5: abnormal weight gain) occurs when the body’s energy expenditure is lower than energy intake.

In addition to hypercaloric caloric intake (increased caloric intake in excess of requirements) and/or lack of exercise, diseases can also lead to weight gain.

One can distinguish the following forms in abnormal weight gain:

  • Increase in tissue mass such as fat or muscle, if applicable.
  • Edema (water retention in the tissue).

Abnormal weight gain can be a symptom of many diseases (see under “Differential diagnoses”).

Course and prognosis: If the weight gain occurs suddenly, involuntarily, particularly strong and without apparent cause, this should be clarified by a doctor.
