Achilles Tendon Pain (Achillodynia): Surgical Therapy

Surgical therapy is considered only when conservative measures have not achieved the desired freedom from symptoms over a period of three to six months after pain-induced cessation of athletic activity. It is required only in rare cases.

It must be kept in mind that the surgical procedure may result in scarring of the tendon, which in turn may lead to discomfort. In addition, the Achilles tendon is more prone to rupture (tear) after surgery.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Splitting of the peritendineum (tendon skin) and debridement (removal of degenerated tissue).

In approximately 50% of cases, a tendon can be easily deinserted (attaching the tendon to bone) and debrided.

Postoperatively, six months of rehabilitation must be expected.
