Acid-base diet for osteoarthritis

Arthrosis is still relatively unexplored. So far, no scientifically founded connections between acidosis or acidosis and arthrosis have been proven. But in the case of gout, which is counted as an inflammatory form of arthrosis or arthritis, connections can be identified.

In gout, known as arthritis urica, an accumulation of uric acid in the body occurs due to impaired kidney function or overproduction of uric acid. These so-called uric acid crystals can be deposited in the joints and trigger inflammatory and painful processes. Proteins are converted to uric acid in the body. Protein-rich foods such as fat, alcohol and meat therefore contribute to increased uric acid formation.

What foods are used?

There are tables in which foods are classified according to the basic and acidic properties they have in the body. For example, since many types of fruit and vegetables are considered to be alkalizing, the acid-base diet plan includes a lot of fruit and vegetables. Fish and meat are counted among the acidifiers and therefore they are not very much part of the acid-base diet.

However, the contents of the tables differ between different authors. The selection of suitable foods is influenced, for example, by the respective definition of the base formers. Some authors define them by two properties, others assign 8 properties to them.

Accordingly, beer, nut nougat cream or ice cream, for example, may appear as base formers in some tables. While in tables in which base formers must meet 8 requirements, other foods are suggested accordingly. In addition, dairy products are evaluated differently. In some acid-base diets they are counted as acidifiers and are correspondingly low in the diet. Other authors evaluate dairy products as neutral and accordingly they may be consumed without restrictions.

Side effect of the diet

A sudden change in diet can overwhelm the body. This can lead to headaches or circulation problems. Also the sudden and long-term renouncement of certain food components can lead to so-called “ravenous hunger attacks”.Since in some acid-base diets dairy products are counted as acid producers, this can lead to bone and tooth problems. It can also have other effects on the body if too little calcium is permanently added to the body.
