Acne: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that can be caused by acne vulgaris (acne) as well:

Skin (L00-L99)

  • Acne fulminans – in the presence of acne conglobata, a febrile infection may occur, which manifests itself with polyarthralgias (joint pain) and necrosis (dead areas) of the skin areas altered by the acne
  • Acne tarda – acne aged > 25 y; risk factors include: lack of pregnancy (OR = 1.7), more frequent hirsutism (OR = 3.5), perceived stress to be high or very high more often in the past month (OR = 2.95), reported lower intake of fruits and vegetables and fish (OR = 2.33 and 2.76, respectively)
  • Scarring / scars

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – sex organs) (N00-N99)

  • Endometriosis ( occurrence of endometrium (lining of the uterus) extrauterine (outside the uterine cavity), for example, in or on the ovaries (ovaries), tubes (fallopian tubes), urinary bladder, or intestines) – women with severe teenage acne have a 20% increased risk of endometriosis

Psyche – Nervous System (F00-F99; G00-G99).

  • Depression (hazard ratio of 1.63 ( 95% confidence interval 1.33-2.00))
  • Dysmorphophobia (body image disorder): prevalence (disease incidence) 10.6%.
  • Social isolation due to exclusion or shame.
