Acromioclavicular Joint Arthrosis (Osteoarthritis): Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate osteoarthritis of the acromioclavicular joint (arthritis of the acromioclavicular joint):

  • Increased sensitivity of the joints to cold
  • Joint swelling, usually on the same side (easily visible to the affected person, since the joint is located directly under the skin)
  • Crepitation in the joint (joint noises) when moving the arm overhead.
  • Muscle tension due to gentle posture
  • Pain during the following movements:
    • Abduction (lateral displacement or the splaying of the arm) of the arm above the vertical arc (> 120°).
    • Abduction, especially in the range between 60° and 120° – painful horizontal arc (“painful arc”).
    • Movement of the arm in front of the body (“bow movement”).
    • Lying on the affected side
  • Pain at rest, possibly radiating to the neck area.
