Active ingredient

The active ingredient contained in Livocab® Nasal Spray is called Levocabastine hydrochloride. It is a drug from the group of so-called second-generation antihistamines. When allergenic particles such as house dust or pollen reach the nasal mucosa via the air, the body’s own messenger substance histamine is released.

This in turn leads to the typical symptoms of an allergic rhinitis such as a runny or blocked nose and frequent sneezing. The active ingredient in Livocab® Nasal Spray blocks the effect of histamine on the nasal mucosa. As a result, symptoms of the allergy are directly reduced and even completely eliminated. The designation of levocabastine hydrochloride as a second-generation antihistamine means that, unlike first-generation antihistamines, it does not have the side-effects typical of the group of drugs that cause fatigue. Unlike antihistamines in tablet form, the effect of levocabastine hydrochloride in Livocab® Nasal Spray is limited to the nose, so that symptoms in the eyes such as tears or burning are not combated.

Interaction

An interaction with other drugs is very unlikely when using Livocab® nasal spray. This is due to the fact that the active ingredient acts almost exclusively locally on the nasal mucosa and only a very small amount reaches the bloodstream. An exception is made for patients with severely impaired kidney function. Here, the active ingredient can collect in the blood, as it is normally excreted quickly via the kidneys.

Side effect

In most cases there are no side effects when using Livocab® nasal spray. Occasionally, a slight burning sensation of the nasal mucosa occurs temporarily, but this usually subsides after a few minutes. In such a case, only one instead of two spray bursts of Livocab® nasal spray should be used for the next application.A hypersensitivity reaction to the active substance or other components of the drug as a side effect occurs much less frequently. If pain or swelling of the nasal mucosa occurs after the application of Livocab® nasal spray, or if other disturbing symptoms occur, prompt presentation to the doctor is recommended.
