Active ingredient of the Betaisodona® solution

The active ingredient of Betaisodona® solution is povidone-iodine. It is a chemical compound which contains the element iodine. When Betaisodona® Solution is applied, iodine particles are continuously released from the compound.

It is suspected that so-called radicals are formed on the skin in combination with water. These chemical particles have a germicidal (antiseptic) effect. In contrast to some other disinfectants iodine covers the entire spectrum of germs.

It works Because iodine is released slowly, Betaisodona® solution does not usually cause severe burning skin irritation, in contrast to the iodine tinctures that were previously also commonly used in the home pharmacy. However, the active ingredient typically causes the skin to turn brown. However, this will disappear by itself and can be washed off the hands, for example.

The effect of Betaisodona® solution and other iodine-containing agents diminishes even after multiple applications and there is no known resistance of pathogens to iodine. – bactericidal (against bacteria),

  • Fungicide (against fungi),
  • Virucidal (against viruses) and
  • Sporozid (against spores). Betaisodona® solution only indirectly influences wound healing.

It kills all germs like bacteria, fungi or viruses in the applied area. This prevents an inflammation of the wound or reduces the germ count in already infected wounds. The intrinsic wound healing is a complicated process which the body can only carry out under its own steam. The germicidal effect of Betaisodona® solution enables wound healing to take place without the disturbing influence of bacteria or fungi.

Side effects of Betaisodona® solution

In most cases, side effects are not to be feared when using Betaisodona® Solution. However, it should be noted that some people are allergic to iodine. These people should not use Betaisodona® Solution under any circumstances to avoid an allergic shock.

However, in the case of everyday wounds and the routine use of Betaisodona® Solution prior to surgery, these side effects are not to be feared. – Only in rare cases, i.e. less than one in a thousand, does a hypersensitivity reaction of the skin occur. Symptoms of an allergy such as itching, redness or blisters can occur a few hours to days after the first application.

  • Very rarely, i.e. less than one in 10,000 users, more dangerous symptoms such as shortness of breath or circulatory problems are caused by Betaisodona® Solution. – Side effects caused by the iodine being absorbed into the bloodstream are also very rare. In the case of large open and burn wounds, significant amounts of the element can enter the circulation.

In patients who have a thyroid gland disease that was often unrecognized until then, the iodine from the Betaisodona® solution can, in the worst case, trigger hyperthyroidism (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism). Symptoms of this extremely rare side effect include an accelerated pulse, restlessness and fever. – Also extremely rare and only described in patients with severe burns, the side effect of using Betaisodona® Solution can be impaired kidney function and hyperacidity of the blood.
