Adhesive pads | Denture adhesive

Adhesive pads

In addition to the adhesive agents, which are available as creams, powders or liquids, there are also so-called adhesive pads. These are foils made of fleece, which can be cut according to the shape of the prosthesis, and which are placed on the wet prosthesis. Like the other adhesives, they must be changed again and again, otherwise they are a particularly good breeding ground for germs.

Ingredients of the denture adhesives

Basically, it should be noted that an ideally fitted denture should sit firmly in the oral cavity even without the use of denture adhesives. However, since this is not always possible in patients suffering from severe jawbone recession or other irregularities, denture adhesives are often used for people with removable dentures. Furthermore, fixing the denture with denture adhesives makes sense, especially during the period of settling in or when wearing temporary (provisional) dentures.

Denture adhesives are available in pharmacies, drugstores and health food stores. They are sold in the form of:

  • Ointments
  • Stripes
  • Slides
  • Liquids and even as
  • Powder is offered.

Even the most inexpensive, standard denture adhesive must meet the highest demands of both dentists and patients, because the preparations must ensure that the removable denture is held firmly in place within the oral cavity and can still be removed without leaving any residue. Furthermore, a denture adhesive should be well tolerated by the user and easy to handle.

High demands are also placed on the ingredients of the denture adhesive, because toxic substances cannot be used in the oral cavity under any circumstances. Even those ingredients that tend to trigger allergic or other hypersensitivity reactions in patients are unsuitable for the production of denture adhesives. In the production of denture adhesives, natural and artificial (synthetic) swelling agents are used. However, the artificial ingredients now make up the majority of denture adhesives (exception: sodium alginate). Swelling agents have the property of entering viscous solutions or suspensions with water, thus the known adhesive effect can be achieved.
