Adrenogenital Syndrome: Examination

A comprehensive clinical examination is the basis for selecting further diagnostic steps:

  • General physical examination – including blood pressure, pulse, body weight, height; further:
    • Inspection (viewing).
      • Skin [female gender: male pattern of hair (upper lip beard, hair on chest), oily skin, acne vulgaris; premature pubic hair]
      • Breast development [female sex: lack of breast development]
      • Lack of pubertal development in both sexes.
      • Genital area
        • Girl/woman [clitoral hypertrophy (enlargement of the clitoris)]
        • Boy/Male [hypogonadism (gonadal hypofunction), i.e. testicular atrophy/small testes, as opposed to increased development of secondary sexual characteristics (pubic hair and penis growth]
    • Auscultation (listening) of the heart.
    • Auscultation of the lungs
    • Palpation (palpation) of the abdomen (abdomen) (tenderness?, knocking pain?, coughing pain?, defensive tension?, hernial orifices?, kidney bearing knocking pain?)
  • Cancer screening – due todifferential diagnoses: gonadal tumor (gonads: male and female gonads (ovaries/ovaries, testes))?, androgen-forming adrenal tumors (extremely rare).
  • Health check
