After getting up

Heel pain that occurs after getting up in the morning typically speaks for certain diseases. Pain in joints is common in rheumatoid arthritis in general. This disease from the rheumatic form is characterized by morning stiffness.

However, several joints and symmetrically on both sides are often affected in arthritis, so that not only the feet, but especially the hands and especially their small toe and finger joints hurt. Many rheumatics need physiotherapeutic stretching exercises in the morning, which they perform at home themselves to overcome the stiffness. Likewise pain means and heat therapy can be necessary, in order to bear the pain in the morning and generally over the day.

Rheumatoid arthritis usually progresses in phases, so that there are phases in which the illness becomes worse and phases in which the symptoms improve or are no longer noticed. Osteoarthritis, which is a wear and tear of the joints, also manifests itself as “starting pains”, which means that especially after periods of rest, such as at night, pain is felt the first time it occurs. Through movement, the pain tends to decrease, but strong strains increase it again.

Arthrosis in the foot joints or directly in the ankle joint can occur physiologically, i.e. normally in old age, as a process of wear and tear. This process is promoted by incorrect loading (foot malpositions, hip and leg malpositions). However, it can also occur after a bone fracture.

Inflammation of a tendon (Achilles tendon, plantar fasciitis) also leads to “tarnishing pain”, which is already noticed in the morning when taking the first steps. These inflammations often occur at the base of the tendon and can occur together with a heel spur, see lower and upper heel spur. Especially the lower heel spur on the sole of the heel typically causes pain during the first steps in the morning. In most cases, relief of the foot, a cushioned heel bed and cold are sufficient to alleviate the symptoms.
