After ovulation

As described in the Causes section, there is a drop in estrogen and an increase in progesterone in the second half of the cycle. Progesterone has a protective effect in terms of water retention. In women who report increased tension and pain in the breasts in the second half of the cycle, a progesterone deficiency should be considered as a cause.

Premenstrual syndrome is a special form of this. Symptomatically, it occurs shortly before menstruation, including feelings of tension in the breast, nausea, attacks of ravenous appetite, diarrhea, mood swings, loss of drive, headaches and back pain. This is caused by a dysbalance in the estrogen/progesterone balance. It is estimated that 25-50% of women of childbearing age suffer from premenstrual syndrome.

Treatment

In the case of a premenstrual syndrome, the substitution of sex hormones in the sense of oral contraceptives can help in the case of a highly pronounced symptomatology with a high degree of suffering. Analgesics or antidepressants are also used in cases of severe symptoms. In mild cases, even dispensing with certain trigger substances such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine can help.

With regard to treatment options for pain during the first half of the cycle, relief can also be provided by therapy with analgesics (painkillers) or contraceptives (oral contraceptives). The oral contraceptives aim to achieve a permanent balance of estrogen and progesterone levels, thus preventing concentration peaks that occur during the physiological cycle. Non-drug measures that promise possible improvements include heat, light physical exercise and diuretic teas (nettle tea).

Occurrence shortly before/during ovulation

Besides regulating the cycle/fertility, estrogens also have an effect on other organs, such as the kidneys. Under the effect of estrogen, the kidneys increase sodium and water retention and excrete less water. As a further consequence, edema can occur in the sense of increased water content in the body. Many women therefore complain of swollen hands, eyelids or a bloated feeling in the time before or during ovulation.

The pain in the breast is also caused by the increased water retention in the breast tissue. The growth of the breast, through swelling of the tissue, puts the skin under increased tension and thus increases the sensitivity of the supplying skin nerves.
