Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of macular degeneration.

Family history

  • Are there any people in your family with eye disease?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you experienced any problems with reading?
  • What do these limitations look like?
    • A blurry spot or gray shadow appears in the middle of the typeface?
  • Do you see distorted?
  • Have you noticed the deterioration of vision especially in low light conditions?
  • Did the discomfort come on suddenly or gradually?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
    • Do you eat a high-fat diet?
    • Do you consume large amounts of high glycemic index carbohydrates (mono- and disaccharides; monosaccharides and disaccharides)?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (eye disease, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease/high blood pressure; coronary artery disease).

    • Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) – regular use (more than once per week at baseline) of ASA (150 mg) increased risk of neovascular AMD (wet AMD)
