Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of macular degeneration.
Family history
- Are there any people in your family with eye disease?
Social anamnesis
Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- Have you experienced any problems with reading?
- What do these limitations look like?
- A blurry spot or gray shadow appears in the middle of the typeface?
- Do you see distorted?
- Have you noticed the deterioration of vision especially in low light conditions?
- Did the discomfort come on suddenly or gradually?
Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.
- Do you eat a balanced diet?
- Do you eat a high-fat diet?
- Do you consume large amounts of high glycemic index carbohydrates (mono- and disaccharides; monosaccharides and disaccharides)?
- Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
- Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
Self history incl. medication history.
- Pre-existing conditions (eye disease, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease/high blood pressure; coronary artery disease).

- Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) – regular use (more than once per week at baseline) of ASA (150 mg) increased risk of neovascular AMD (wet AMD)
