Agrimony: Effect and Side Effects

Aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the drug have antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-oxidant properties, which are due in particular to the content of tannins. The astringent effect of Agrimoniae herba is due to the fact that the tannins react with the proteins of inflamed mucous membranes, protecting them from toxic substances, which leads to accelerated inflammatory healing.

The flavonoids underline the anti-inflammatory effect of the tannins. Antidiabetic effects have also been demonstrated in animal studies.
