AIDS (HIV): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of HIV infection.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Have you ever injured yourself on possibly infected material?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed symptoms such as fatigue or general feeling of illness?
  • Do you feel diminished ability to perform?
  • Do you suffer from diarrhea?
  • Have you noticed a skin rash?
  • Have you noticed any unusual skin changes?
  • Do you have a fever? If so, for how long and how high is the fever?
  • Have you noticed any lymph node enlargement?
  • Do you have joint pain, headache, muscle pain?
  • Do you suffer from nausea?
  • When and in what order did the symptoms occur?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you have unwanted weight loss? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • Do you have frequently changing sex partners?
  • Do you have unprotected sexual intercourse?
  • Are you homosexual or bisexual?
  • Does your partner suffer from HIV infection or other infections such as hepatitis (liver inflammation)?
  • Has your appetite changed?
  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
    • Do you use common needles and your injecting equipment?
