Alprostadil Cream

Products

Alprostadil cream Vitaros was approved in many countries in 2016. It is an export approval. In some countries, it is marketed as Virirec.

Structure and properties

Alprostadil (C20H34O5, Mr = 354.5 g/mol) exists as a white to slightly yellowish crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water. The substance structurally corresponds to natural prostaglandin E1. In addition to the active substance, the cream also contains the excipient DDAIP to improve skin penetration.

Effects

Alprostadil (ATC G04BE01) relaxes smooth muscle in the penis and dilates cavernous arteries. This results in an erection. The effects are due to binding to PGE receptors on smooth muscle cells. Unlike phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors such as sildenafil (Viagra), erection occurs independently of sexual stimulation.

Indications

For the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men (erectile dysfunction).

Dosage

According to the professional information. The cream is applied to the tip of the penis (on the penile opening) before sexual intercourse no more than once a day. The effect occurs after 5 to 30 minutes and lasts for about one to two hours. For the correct use of the cream, please refer to the package leaflet and the professional information.
