Alternative treatment measures | Stroke: Can Physiotherapy Help?

Alternative treatment measures

A stroke means serious changes for the affected person and his social environment. A multidisciplinary treatment is necessary. Therefore, most patients receive occupational therapy in parallel to physiotherapy.

In this therapy, ADL (activities of daily life, such as washing, dressing) are trained, among other things, in order to enable the affected person to achieve the greatest possible independence and quality of life. In addition, occupational therapy advises the affected person with regard to the supply of aids, workplace and living space adaptation. The use of aids can be trained.

Speech therapy helps with speech and swallowing disorders. For attention disorders and other psychological problems, patients receive psychotherapy and/or brain performance training. Music therapy, basal stimulation and many other therapeutic approaches are also suitable.

Summary

A stroke is a medical emergency caused by a local circulatory disorder in the brain. Depending on the localization and extent of the cerebrovascular event, the symptoms range from hemiplegia, spasticity, memory and speech disorders to gait disorders and many more. In a multidisciplinary therapy consisting of nursing, speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc., physiotherapy plays an elementary role. It attempts to restore the patient’s mobility, for example through mobilization, muscle, balance, coordination and gait training.
