Alternatives to Mesalazine

In the acute phase of ulcerative colitis, mesalazine is the first choice. Patients with Crohn’s disease also show a good response to the anti-inflammatory agent. In particularly severe cases, the physician may prescribe additional cortisone at times.

If there is no response to the therapy, immunosuppressive drugs are used to inhibit the inflammation. The drugs include azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine or antibodies such as Infliximab. The last therapy option for both diseases is surgical therapy.
