The following symptoms and complaints may indicate amenorrhea:
Leading symptom
- Primary amenorrhea: absence of menarche (first menstrual period):
- Until after the age of 14 (in the absence of pubertal development) or.
- Until after the age of 16 (when pubertal development has already begun).
- Secondary amenorrhea: no menstrual bleeding for > 90 days with already established cycle.
Warning signs (red flags)
- Anamnestic information:
- Abnormal weight loss (> 10%) → think of: Anorexia nervosa
- Excessive training / competitive sports
- Visual disturbances/facial field defects (bitemporal hemianopsia/visual disturbance with loss of both temporal visual fields) or other neurological symptoms (e.g., headache) and cranial nerve compression Nausea (nausea)/vomiting → think of: Pituitary tumor (tumor of the pituitary gland; e.g., prolactinoma).
