Amineptin

Products

In many countries, there are no finished medicines containing amineptine on the market. Amineptin is one of the narcotics and requires an aggravated prescription. It was withdrawn from the market in France and other European countries in 1999 (Survector, Servier).

Structure and properties

Amineptine (C22H27NO2, Mr = 337.5 g/mol) belongs to the tricyclic antidepressants. In drugs, it is present as amineptine hydrochloride.

Effects

Amineptine (ATC N06AA19) has antidepressant, stimulant, and indirect dopaminergic properties. The effects are due to inhibition of dopamine reuptake into the presynaptic neuron and enhanced dopamine release. Unlike other antidepressants, it has a more rapid onset of action and little effect on other neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin.

Indications

For the treatment of depression.

Abuse

Amineptine can be abused and overdosed, leading to dependence.

Adverse effects

Amineptine has liver-toxic properties and may cause liver inflammation (hepatitis), among other side effects. Other possible side effects include skin reactions (acne), cardiovascular and psychiatric disorders.
