Anal Itching (Pruritus Ani): Medical History

The anamnesis (medical history) represents an important component in the diagnosis of pruritus ani (anal itching).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the itching been present?
  • Is the itching continuous or intermittent?
  • When does the itching occur? Rather during the day or at night?
  • Does the itching exist exclusively in the area of the anus?
  • Are there any other symptoms such as swelling of the anal region or rectal discharge?
  • Have you noticed any bleeding from the anus?
  • Was there a triggering moment?
    • Spicy food?
    • After using lubricant?
    • Foreign body?
    • Sexual practices (anal intercourse)?
  • Do you practice adequate personal and intimate hygiene?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you have regular bowel movements? Has this changed in shape, color, frequency, etc.?
  • What is the consistency of the stool?
  • Is the bowel movement painful?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (diabetes mellitus; intestinal and rectal diseases; skin diseases).
