Anethole trithione is commercially available in the form of dragées (Sulfarlem S25). It has been approved in many countries since 1973.

Structure and properties

Anethole trithione (C10H8OS3, Mr = 240.4 g/mol) is a dithiol-3-thione derivative of anethole, the main ingredient of anise and fennel essential oils. It is present in the form of bitter-tasting, orange crystals that are practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Anetholtrithione (ATC A16AX02) is effective against dry mouth and is a choleretic. It is an older drug for which no modern registration studies are available. In our view, the drug is insufficiently documented.
