Another Pregnancy?

In most cases, there is no medical reason to believe that another pregnancy will also end in miscarriage. Although the risk of another miscarriage increases in women who have had two miscarriages, the reasons for each miscarriage may be different.

No timing rules for another pregnancy

Basically, there are no rules for how soon a woman should get pregnant again after a miscarriage. It depends on the woman and her way of processing the event. Some want to get pregnant again as soon as possible, while others need months or years before they trust themselves to take such a step again.

Counseling after a miscarriage

Independent medical counseling is provided by the counseling centers of Pro Familia (including genetic counseling), Caritas and Donum Vitae. The counseling centers also offer psychological care after miscarriage, abortion, and during a new pregnancy. Human genetic examinations and consultations are available through the corresponding institutes at the university hospitals. For this, one should contact the nearest university hospital – if the referral is not already made through the treating gynecologist.

Funeral after a miscarriage

For a long time, the distinction between “miscarriage” on the one hand and “stillbirth” on the other played a role when parents wanted to bury their dead child. In many places, the burial of “miscarriages” was not possible, but that of stillbirths was. It has since become accepted that parents who have lost their child to miscarriage also need a place to grieve.

In most German states, these children can be buried at the parents’ request, even though there are no corresponding laws, only recommendations from the relevant committees. The appropriate contact person can be found at the local cemetery office.
