Anthelmintic Drugs: Effects, Uses & Risks

Depending on the type of worms, a worm infestation can cause severe symptoms in humans. Therefore, this should always be eliminated with an adequate vermifuge or anthelmintic.

What are anthelmintics?

Eating garlic in pressed or cooked form can also help to expel the worms. A vermifuge, also called an anthelmintic, is a medicine used to treat infections with worms. Most worm species enter the human body through food or other oral or anal routes and reside predominantly, or at least initially, in the intestines. Therefore, this clinical picture is also called helminthiasis, worm disease caused by intestinal worms. Other worms, however, enter the body through the skin. They usually cause severe symptoms and can damage certain organs. Depending on the type of worm, various drugs are used. However, all chemical-pharmaceutical worming drugs aim to kill the worm.

Application, effect and use

The medicinal worming agents are taken orally. It can be helpful to empty the intestine completely beforehand with the help of an enema or similar. Due to the cycles of worms and their eggs, the course of treatment must be repeated at least once after a few weeks. The chemical worming agents try to penetrate into the worm’s organism and block certain processes here. Worm-killing agents from the benzimidazole group paralyze supporting proteins in the cells of the worm, so that the cells can no longer absorb sugars that are vital for the worm. Worm-killing agents based on the active ingredient pyrvinium embonate also prevent sugar utilization and starve the worm to death. The active ingredient niclosamide instead leads to an accumulation of the intermediate products of sugar utilization, which result in poisoning of the worm. Another approach is to disrupt the transmission of excitation in the worm. In this case, worming agents with the active ingredient pyrantel block the transmission of excitation between nerves and muscles. The active ingredient praziquantel causes overexcitation of the worm’s muscle cells. Both agents cause paralysis and the resulting death of the worm. Herbal or homeopathic worm remedies, on the other hand, try to change the environment in which the worm lives so that the worm feels unwell and leaves the body. This is also intended to strengthen the body’s immune system so that it can fight off the worm infestation on its own.

Herbal, natural and pharmaceutical worm remedies.

There are various worming remedies that can be used against worm infestation. The chemical-pharmaceutical try, as described, to intervene in the organism of the worm and to bring this thereby to the death. For this purpose, drugs are available as juice or tablets with the active ingredients benzimidazole, niclosamide, pyrantel and praziquantel. A few tropical worm species must be combated with the help of foreign medications, as there are no medications for this on the German market. A homeopathic worming remedy is Spigelia anthelmia, Cina and Aspidium Panna. These remedies have a vermifuge power and furthermore act on certain organs. Since worm infestation often indicates hyperacidity of the body, the acid-base balance should be balanced. For this purpose, a diet of raw vegetables and natural yogurt helps. Furthermore, eating garlic in pressed or cooked form, sauerkraut, carrots, grapefruit seed oil and papaya can help to expel the worms. Since worms feed on carbohydrates, the consumption of meat, white flour and sugar should be avoided for a certain period of time. Enemas of warm vinegar water with tea tree and grapefruit seed oil can be used to flush the intestines. To prevent worms from migrating, the anus can be creamed on the outside in the evening with a greasy cream or tea tree oil, also possible as a mixture with garlic. In case of worm infestation it is especially necessary to pay attention to good hygiene. Washing hands should be done several times a day, not only after going to the toilet and before eating. Change towels, underwear and bedding especially often and cook while washing. It may also be useful to use paper towels temporarily so that the worming medicine is not taken in vain.

Risks and side effects

A chemical-pharmaceutical anthelmintic has several side effects. In most cases, nausea, stomach pain, or diarrhea can be expected.Since the chemical worming agents damage the intestinal flora, it should be rebuilt afterwards.
