Aphthe: Medical History

Medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of aphtae.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common? Do any family members (e.g., parents/grandparents) have aphthae?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long have the complaints existed?
  • Have you noticed increased salivation or bad breath?
  • Do you have any other complaints that have persisted since you developed Aphthe (e.g., disturbances in food intake)?
  • Have you been ill recently (infectious disease)?
  • Have you had any recent injuries in the oral cavity?
  • Do you suffer from stress?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis

  • Do you have any complaints related to your digestive system?
    • Diarrhea?
    • Abdominal pain?
    • Flatulence?
    • Nausea?
  • Are you getting enough sleep? (Ideally, sleep between 6.5 and 7.5 hours).
  • Do you wear braces or dentures?
  • Do you use toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol more often? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses of it per day?
