Medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of aphtae.
Family history
- What is the general health of your family members?
- Are there any diseases in your family that are common? Do any family members (e.g., parents/grandparents) have aphthae?
Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- How long have the complaints existed?
- Have you noticed increased salivation or bad breath?
- Do you have any other complaints that have persisted since you developed Aphthe (e.g., disturbances in food intake)?
- Have you been ill recently (infectious disease)?
- Have you had any recent injuries in the oral cavity?
- Do you suffer from stress?
Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis
- Do you have any complaints related to your digestive system?
- Diarrhea?
- Abdominal pain?
- Flatulence?
- Nausea?
- Are you getting enough sleep? (Ideally, sleep between 6.5 and 7.5 hours).
- Do you wear braces or dentures?
- Do you use toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate?
- Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
- Do you drink alcohol more often? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses of it per day?
Self anamnesis incl. medication anamnesis
- Pre-existing conditions (diseases of the gastrointestinal tract).
- Allergies, such as food allergy.
- Pregnancies; menopause? (hormonal changes)
