Aphthe: Therapy

General measures

  • Pay attention to a thorough oral hygiene!
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Stress
  • Ensure adequate sleep
  • If necessary, have braces or dentures readjusted
  • If necessary, change the toothpaste: The use of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)-free toothpaste has proven beneficial. This reduces the time to heal and the painfulness of the aphthae.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • If a connection can be established between the occurrence of aphthae and the consumption or consumption of certain foods, these should be avoided accordingly. Common triggers are acidic foods such as vinegar, fruit (citrus, kiwi, sour apples), rhubarb, sauerkraut or sour cucumbers and tomatoes. Currant juice is also irritating to the mouth. Salted foods as well as hot spices such as pepper, curry and paprika, hot foods, alcohol and drinks containing CO2 should also be avoided.
    • As long as aphthae persist in the mouth, hard foods such as rusks and rolls should be consumed with caution. They can additionally irritate the attacked mucosa.
    • Diet rich in:
      • Vitamins (vitamin B12)
      • Trace elements (zinc)
      • Omega-3 fatty acids (marine fish)
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
