Apples: Edible At Any Time of Day

Juice, mush, cake and jelly are probably the best-known products made from apples, the Germans’ favorite fruit. In addition, however, there is a whole lot more that can be made from apple. Here are ideas and 5 recipes for the healthy preparation of apples.

Apples in the morning

Your day starts off really well with homemade granola: soak oatmeal overnight with three times the amount of water. Add grated apple, some lemon juice, honey, and milk and grated nuts on top.

Apple for lunch

At lunchtime, a fennel-apple risotto is then delicious, for which you sauté four finely sliced fennel and an onion in olive oil. After adding three quarters of an apple, salt and pepper, let everything cook for ten minutes. Before serving, mix in cooked rice and sprinkle everything with Parmesan cheese.

A real delicacy is goat cheese on apple: cream 50 g of butter with egg yolk, mix in a tablespoon of toasted and chopped pine nuts, breadcrumbs, salt and white pepper. Cut two goat cheeses in half and spread with the mixture, then bake at 250 °C top heat for a few minutes until golden.

Briefly fry 20 g of butter and half a teaspoon of honey in a pan, add a large sliced apple and deglaze with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Stew the fruit until translucent and now place it on the plates. On top, place the warm cheese halves, which can be decorated with toasted pine nuts and fresh herbs.

Apple in the evening

For the TV evening it may then be dried apple rings. Remove the stem, core plus blossom with an apple corer and cut the apple into thin rings. To dry, you can hang the slices threaded on a string over a heater, for example.

If you dry in the oven – at about 50 °C and circulating air – you should leave the door open a crack. However, a dehydrator is best suited for this purpose and can be purchased for about 100 euros. The healthy snacks are ready as soon as they have a leathery consistency. The dried fruit should be stored in a dark place and in tightly sealed jars.

By the way, an apple in the evening is supposed to help prevent insomnia and make it easier to sleep through the night. However, there are some people for whom the vitamin C contained in apples acts like a stimulant – it is better for them not to eat apples in the evening. For everyone else, apples are just as healthy in the evening as during the day.

Apple as a gift

A sophisticated seasoning for rice, cheese, meat or fish is an apple chutney: roughly grate one kilogram of apples, dice seven tomatoes and one onion. Chop four tablespoons of candied ginger and grind two cloves and three dried chilies.

Add 200 g of raisins, 600 g of sugar, 0.5 l of apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Let the mixed ingredients simmer gently for 1.5 hours after bringing to a boil. Pour the jellified apple chutney hot into jars and seal them.
