Arm Pain

Arm pain (ICD-10-GM R52.-: Pain, not elsewhere classified) can be the symptom of many different diseases. Common causes include joint injuries, muscle strains, and also conditions such as osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear) or rheumatic diseases.

Depending on the cause, arm pain can be acute, such as in the context of injury, or chronic, such as in the case of osteoarthritis.

Arm pain can be a symptom of many diseases (see under “Differential diagnoses”).

Course and prognosis: The course and prognosis depend on the underlying cause. Harmless arm pain usually disappears spontaneously (by itself) after a short time. In the case of prolonged, chronic pain or sudden, very severe pain, a doctor should be consulted for further clarification. Likewise for swollen or overheated joints of the arm.
