Associated symptoms and warning signs | Pupils of different sizes

Associated symptoms and warning signs

For people with uneven pupils, certain symptoms or features are an indication that there is an underlying disease and that a doctor should be consulted. These warning signals include:

  • A drooping eyelid (ptosis)
  • Seeing double images
  • Loss of vision
  • Severe headache or sore throat
  • Eye Pain

Treatment

Often no treatment is necessary for pupils of different sizes, because they return to normal by themselves. If, however, the cause of the unequal pupils is a disease, the therapy depends on the cause of the disease. There is no direct therapy for the diagnosis of Horner’s syndrome.

Only the individual symptoms of Horner’s syndrome can be treated. Head injuries resulting in pupils of different sizes should be transported to hospital as soon as possible. In emergency situations, a CT scan of the head is usually taken first. If this reveals a cerebral hemorrhage, this is treated surgically, depending on the size of the bleeding.

Prognosis and duration

Depending on the cause of the different pupil size, the prognosis varies. Often this inequality is harmless because the pupil diameter can change depending on the day and then normalizes again during the course of the day. In addition, uneven pupils may be congenital and pose no health risk.

If there is no explanation for the sudden appearance of differently sized pupils and this condition persists for a longer period of time, a doctor should be consulted. The doctor will make a prognosis depending on the cause of the disease.
