Associated symptoms

Usually, hiccups occur in babies without any other symptoms. A cramp-like contraction of the baby’s abdominal and chest muscles in the rhythm of the hiccups is quite normal. If the hiccups are accompanied by a strong sputum of mucus or fluid (anything beyond the baby’s normal vomiting) should be noted.

If the mucus is green, or the sputum does not go away even after one or two days, the baby should be presented to the pediatrician (pediatrician). Also in case of fever, the baby should be presented to the pediatrician. and

Baby hiccups treatment

Normally, hiccups will stop on their own, even in a baby. In exceptional cases it may take several hours, but no intervention is necessary. Also, babies usually do not mind hiccups and can drink or fall asleep peacefully even with hiccups.

Nevertheless, there are some simple ways to end hiccups, but none of the methods listed here has a hundred percent success rate. Especially after drinking, but also at other times, the baby can be taken in the arms. At the same time the baby can be gently patted on the back.

This leads to the so-called “burping” (burping), which allows excess air to escape from the body and makes breathing more relaxed. In addition, the body contact and warmth relaxes the baby, which makes breathing more relaxed. In the same way, in some cases it can help to offer the baby something to drink again.

Drinking changes the baby’s breathing rhythm, which can break through the hiccups. Warm drinks are much better than cold ones. A warm cherry pit sack, which should not be too hot, can also have a relaxing effect on the baby’s stomach and thus lead to a normal breathing rhythm again.

In general, you can also try to relax the baby in other ways (e.g. by drinking a warm cherry pit sack).e.g. by a light massage of the soles of the feet) or distract it (e.g. by a toy or similar).

The aim should be to relax and distract the baby so that it falls back into a normal breathing rhythm on its own. Finally, you can also try to blow lightly in the baby’s face, this will cause a slight fright, i.e. surprise, which will change the breathing rhythm and allow it to return to normal. There are also many different methods for adult hiccups, but some of them are very unsuitable for babies and can even be dangerous (e.g. holding the nose closed), which is why they should never be performed on babies!
