Swelling per se can have many different causes. In general, there is increased fluid retention, mostly due to an inflammatory reaction. If swelling occurs on the inner ankle, the person affected often has other symptoms such as pain at rest or when walking, or reddened skin in this area.

In most cases, the swelling is preceded by an event, such as an inward twisting of the ankle. Or there have been symptoms such as pain for a long time, which become stronger and stronger over time and make movement in the joint more and more difficult. This is more likely to indicate chronic incorrect or excessive strain.

However, swelling can also have systemic causes, such as diseases of the lymphatic or vascular system or rheumatoid arthritis. In general, it is recommended to have the exact causes clarified by a doctor in order to exclude serious diseases. Swelling can occur with the described causes, but does not have to. It only occurs relatively often in the context of the inflammatory reaction, often with a time delay.

In principle, pain in the inner ankle is the first warning signal from our body that something is wrong. This can range from the wrong load, overweight, a pinched nerve, hardened muscles to systemic or neurological diseases. In this context it is important to know whether the pain is caused by a specific event or whether the problems have gradually worsened. In general, it is advisable to seek medical advice when in doubt, so that symptoms do not worsen or underlying diseases remain undetected.

These symptoms indicate a thrombosis

In the diagnosis of thrombosis there are further differentiations to be considered. For example, a distinction is made between arterial or venous thromboses and the superficial or deep location of the affected vessels. Roughly speaking, thromboses can sometimes cause severe pain, swelling of the leg and a feeling of tension. However, it is rather unlikely that these signs only affect the inner ankle, but rather the entire lower leg or the leg itself. If a thrombosis is suspected, a doctor should always be consulted promptly in order to make a reliable diagnosis or exclusion diagnosis.
