Association

The dressing is also one of the first measures to be taken after the accident. It is applied with a little pressure so that it can prevent swelling through compression. Similar to a tape bandage, it provides support for the joint and supports the joint structures under load.

In the acute phase, an ice pack can also be applied under the bandage, which also helps to prevent swelling. Later, pain-relieving and cooling ointments can be applied under the bandage. The bandage is applied in parallel diagonal lines under light tension. It should be applied around the thumb to the base bones of the fingers. Here, too, care should be taken to ensure a tight but comfortable fit, which continues to ensure blood circulation and movement of the fingers.

Homeopathy

Homeopathic remedies can also be used to treat sprains. Agnus castus, Arnica montana, Bellis perennis, Bryonia alba, Rhus toxicodendron and Ruta graveolens can be used. The drugs are administered in low potencies.

Ten to twenty drops are taken three times a day. These substances have a positive effect on healing, relieve pain, promote the reduction of inflammation and boost the body’s self-healing powers. Schüssler Salt No. 1 Calcium Fluoratum can also be taken in case of a sprain.

It is supposed to promote the elasticity of the fibres and can thus have a positive effect on the healing of a sprain, overstretching or even a pulled muscle. The duration of the injury and the subsequent healing process depends on the severity and extent of the injury. In addition, the cause of the accident, the age of the patient and the need for treatment in relation to the patient’s profession play an important role in the healing process.

A simple sprain (distortion) of the wrist usually heals quite quickly and without complications. The healing process can be promoted by sparing the affected joint in the first few weeks. Immediately after the accident, it is important to follow the PECH rules.

Compression, elevation and cooling can stop swelling from worsening and intra-articular haematoma. Nevertheless, the healing process requires several weeks before the joint can be fully loaded again. Since the joint capsule and surrounding ligaments may still be unstable after a longer period of non-stressing, it is recommended to stabilize the joint with bandages or tapes to support the sprain even after it has healed.

In this way, injuries such as another sprain, pulled muscle or torn ligament can be avoided. In the case of a complicated sprain, the joint capsule and ligaments can also be affected. Since a sprain is usually a spot injury, it is often accompanied by combination injuries that can have an unfavorable effect on healing.

If the ligaments are also torn in a sprain, surgical treatment is often necessary. Otherwise, it can happen that the ligaments do not grow together properly and also form scars, which can then impair the resilience and stability of the joint. The ligament can also slacken and thus lose its supporting effect on the joint.

Further injuries can then be the result. In this case an operation is unavoidable. Healing and resilience continues for a few weeks until complete recovery.

Surgery poses further risks, such as infection of the surgical wound. It can significantly prolong the healing time. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a physician who has specialized knowledge in this area at an early stage and can accordingly avoid further complications.
