Autan

Definition

Autan® is the Europe-wide trade name for an insect repellent based on active ingredients of the repellent class. A repellent is a chemical substance that repels insects from humans. The special feature of repellents is that these substances do not kill or destroy the insects. When applied to the skin, the substance evaporates and forms a scented envelope that keeps insects away.

Application of Autan

Autan® is, as already described, an insect repellent. It is effective against numerous insects: After applying the substance, one obtains a duration of action of about 8 hours against mosquitoes and horseflies and about 4 hours against mosquitoes. The exact duration of action must be noted on the product, as it can vary from product to product.

Autan® also applies to insect repellents suitable for use in the tropics. It should be noted that Autan® does not help against: Due to its suitability for use in the tropics, Autan® can also be used as a malaria prophylaxis. – like mosquitoes

Dosage

Autan® is available in spray and gel form. It is important that the substance is applied evenly to the exposed skin. One should be careful when applying Autan® to the mouth and eye area.

Wounded skin areas should also be avoided, as the substance penetrates the body and would cause side effects. The application must be repeated. If sunscreen is used in parallel, it should be applied at least 20 minutes before to avoid side effects.

It should always be considered that circumstances influence the duration of effect. These include humidity or sweating. You can reduce the duration of the effect.

Side effects

Side effects with Autan® are rarely observed. Nevertheless, some patients may experience skin irritation and mucous membrane irritation, which may be accompanied by itching. Allergic reactions can never be ruled out.

An allergic shock, on the other hand, is rather rare. Compared to DEET (diethyltoluamide, another insect repellent), however, the icaridine agents are better tolerated. Due to the poorer absorption into the body through the skin and the penetration into the blood, Icaridin shows an even better tolerance despite the few and rare side effects.

This means that it can also be used for sensitive skin. With simultaneous use of sunscreen, it should be applied at least 20 minutes before Autan®, as sunscreen can increase the penetration of Autan® through the skin into the organism. It is important that the products are kept away from children so that they do not swallow them. Accidental ingestion of Autan® can lead to more dramatic side effects, which can cause heart and brain damage. Vomiting and nausea can also be the result.
