Avanafil for Erectile Dysfunction

Avanafil therapy is a drug treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED).

Indications (areas of application)

  • Erectile dysfunction

Contraindications

  • Patients who have had a myocardial infarction (heart attack), apoplexy (stroke), or life-threatening arrhythmia within the past 6 months,
  • Patients with persistent hypotension (blood pressure < 90/50 mmHg) or hypertension (blood pressure > 170/100 mmHg).
  • Patients with unstable angina, angina during intercourse, or congestive heart failure (congestive heart failure) stage 2 or higher, as classified by the New York Heart Association (NYHA)
  • Patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh stage C).
  • Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min).
  • Patients experiencing loss of vision in one eye due to nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), whether or not this episode is related to prior exposure to a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor
  • Patients with known hereditary degenerative retinopathies (retinal diseases),
  • Patients using potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (including ketoconazole, ritonavir, atazanavir, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, saquinavir, and telithromycin).

Drug interactions and other interactions (avanafil must not be co-administered with nitrates (NO donors) and other possible drug interactions must be considered: see the SmPC).

Possible side effects

  • Common: headache (7%), feeling hot, nasal congestion.
  • Occasional: dizziness, somnolence, sinus pain, blurred vision, palpitations (heart palpitations), flushing, exertional dyspnea (shortness of breath on exertion), dyspepsia (irritable stomach), nausea, vomiting
