Baby Swimming: Water Games for the Little Ones

During baby swimming, children lose their fear of water – or don’t develop it in the first place. What is there to consider in the process? Anna splutters happily and splashes her little hands in the water. Her little friend Felix is not so pleased. His mouth curls up miserably. Eight mothers and fathers stand in the knee-high, warm water with their three- to twelve-month-old children. They lovingly scoop water over their little ones’ backs or support their first and still awkward rowing movements.

Health benefits of baby swimming

Baby swimming classes are a playful parent-child exercise class. Splashing around in the water strengthens the heart and circulation as well as breathing activity; motor skills and body control are encouraged. The water pressure gently massages the skin. At the same time, joints and muscles are strengthened by the movement against the water resistance. The warm water is also relaxing. Baby swimming is already possible with a ten-week-old baby. But it is not until the child is ten months old that he or she is allowed to paddle freely in the baby pool – with the appropriate equipment and always under supervision. Parents should not initially “let the child into the water” without professional guidance.

Where is baby swimming offered?

There are courses in almost all indoor swimming pools, sometimes also in health centers and fitness studios, as well as in special baby swimming schools. Parents learn how to hold their children and the best movements to use to pull them through the water. In addition, the course instructors know how to make the adjustment to water easier and which water games go down well. And splashing around in a group is especially fun. Before booking, parents should take a closer look at the facilities. Often a trial lesson is also possible.

This is what you should consider

Important: Is the air and water temperature right? Are there enough changing tables? Are the changing rooms suitable for mother and child? If all these questions can be answered with yes, nothing speaks against it: Then it’s off into the water.

  • The ideal bathing temperature is 32 to 33 degrees Celsius. The toddler pools are subject to special health regulations. The water is elaborately filtered and treated. The chlorine content is precisely dosed: Lightly chlorinated water prevents fungal infections.
  • The best time for swimming is between meals. Therefore, ask shortly before registration for the exact course times. Even the biggest water rat has – if hungry or tired – no fun splashing.
  • Babies freeze easily, so 10 to 30 minutes in the water is enough. As soon as the child whines, trembles or gets blue lips, it’s time to go out.
  • The chlorinated water dries out delicate baby skin, so always take baby shower gel and skin care cream.
  • The bathing suit includes a bathing suit with integrated aqua diaper, if necessary swim sleeves in the smallest size and bathing sandals to avoid slipping on the slippery tiles.
