Back headaches while lying down

If the back of the headache occurs only when lying down, this can limit the search for the cause. For example, a muscular cause could be in the foreground. Many people suffer from a permanent bad posture, which is often caused and maintained by the job (where one sits a lot, for example).

The unnatural posture makes the muscles cramp. Most people lack sufficiently strong muscles to compensate for the permanent poor posture. The resulting back or neck pain can continue into the muscles of the occiput. A few muscle strands of the back are attached to exactly this bony structure, which then causes pain to the affected person – the back of the head. Since you are active and distracted throughout the day, the pain only really comes to the fore when your body is at rest and you are lying down in a relaxed position, for example.

Back headaches with cold

Headaches occur in various forms as a side effect of a cold. While initially only the nose runs and the throat scratches, a viral infection with rhino, corona or adenovirus often causes headaches and aching limbs after a few days. Such headaches can also occur with other causes of disease that cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses.

They preferably occur in the forehead region, but can also extend beyond the skull to the back of the head. However, there is no specific “cold headache” – it can vary from patient to patient. The mechanism underlying the headache is probably the following: the inflammation of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses causes a change in pressure in the airways.

The inflammatory secretion cannot drain off sufficiently and leads to painful congestion. However, the process is usually harmless and is normally regulated by the body’s own immune system. Another theory states that the headache is a reaction of the body to certain proteins (cytokines) that are produced whenever the immune system is confronted with a viral infection.

During pregnancy, extensive changes in the body and hormone balance take place.The expectant mother has to adjust to the new situation, which rarely runs completely smoothly. Especially pregnant women often suffer from back headaches. The headaches have different backgrounds and are caused by different circumstances.

Among other things, the body posture changes, which can lead to back pain involving the neck and the occipital region. The nausea during pregnancy and the associated vomiting can intensify an underlying headache, which is due to the increase in pressure in the head during choking. Changing your diet and not drinking coffee in the morning can also be reflected in headaches.

Due to the various processes in the mother-to-be’s body, the sleep rhythm also changes. Without sufficient rest, even otherwise healthy people develop headaches over a longer period of time. During pregnancy it is in the interest of the unborn child not to eliminate headaches with medication. A sufficient amount of drinking, sufficient rest, beneficial massages and a balanced diet can work wonders.
