Bacterial Meningitis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis (bacterial meningitis).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Have you been abroad recently? If so, where exactly?
  • Have you had any contact with sick people? (Meningitis in the environment?)

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any painful neck stiffness?*
  • Do you suffer from symptoms such as fever, headache, irritability or photophobia?
  • Do you suffer from nausea? Have you vomited?
  • Have you had a seizure?*
  • Have you noticed any signs of paralysis?*
  • Do you have any dizzy spells?
  • Have you noticed any skin changes?
  • Have you noticed any changes in your behavior (irritability, confusion, lack of drive)?
  • How long have these changes existed?
  • Has the symptomatology worsened? In what period of time?
  • Did you have contact with other ill persons?
  • What was the last thing you ate?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (neurological diseases, ENT diseases, infections (cold, earache); condition after head trauma / head injury?)
  • Operations
  • Vaccination status (Haemophilus influenzae)
  • Allergies

Medication history

  • Antibiotic use?
  • Immunosuppression?
  • Cytostatic drugs
