Bad breath treatment

For a successful treatment of bad breath, the underlying causes must usually be eliminated. For the patient concerned it is therefore essential to determine the individual causes for the development of bad breath. Usually an extensive questioning by the physician and the analysis of certain habits gives a first conclusion.

The actual treatment adapted to the cause can be carried out with various household remedies or with the help of pharmaceutical products. Among the best known household remedies for bad breath are certain herbs, vegetables and fruits. These are particularly suitable for patients whose bad breath is caused by a high concentration of bacterial pathogens within the oral cavity.

For example, ginger, which is cut into thin slices and placed on the back of the tongue, provides fresh breath after only a few minutes. The active ingredient apiol contained in parsley leaves can also be helpful in treating the cause of bad breath. By regularly chewing some parsley leaves, the unpleasant odors in the air we breathe will decrease significantly.

Since the cause of bad breath in the majority of those affected is inflammatory processes in the area of the gums or carious defects, improving oral hygiene is a crucial component of treatment. In order to reduce the risk of tooth decay or inflammation of the periodontium, it is often recommended to eat unsweetened yoghurt. In addition, to treat bad breath in these cases, the oral cavity must be extensively cleaned.

Often carious defects have to be removed and a filling therapy has to be performed. For patients suffering from inflammatory processes in the area of the gums or the periodontium, extensive professional tooth cleaning should be carried out. In case of advanced processes a so-called open or closed curettage may be necessary.

In the course of cause-oriented bad breath treatment, it is generally recommended that those affected discontinue the consumption of certain foods and beverages as far as possible. In contrast, black tea, for example, whose ingredients have an inhibiting effect on the growth of bacterial pathogens, is particularly suitable for the treatment of bacteria-associated bad breath. In addition, regular mouthwashes with sage tea help to combat foul-smelling breath. A mouthrinse with xylitol powder is used particularly frequently in the treatment of bad breath. This powder removes nutrients from the oral cavity that are vital for bacterial pathogens, thus starving the bacteria to a certain extent and thus improving the oral flora. Bad breath does not usually return with regular use of the xylitol powder.
