What is a cold balm?

A cold balsam is a product that usually contains essential oils and other vegetable substances. As the name suggests, it is used to relieve the symptoms of a cold such as sore throat, runny nose and cough. The ointment can be applied to the chest, back or even the neck and should be massaged in lightly afterwards. Some products can also be inhaled dissolved in hot water. Regardless of the form of application, the cold balm has an expectorant, decongesting and anti-inflammatory effect.

For whom is a cold balm useful?

Although colds or viral infections of the upper respiratory tract are usually harmless diseases, the symptoms can be very annoying for those affected. That is why it makes sense to get relief with a cold balm. This remedy with essential oils has a decongestant, anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect.

In principle, anybody suffering from a cold can use cold balm. However, not all products are suitable for babies, children and pregnant women. It depends on the ingredients. You should therefore read the package insert carefully. In addition, if you have a prolonged cold with slimy sputum or high fever, you should consult a doctor.

How does a cold balsam work?

By its ethereal oils and further vegetable contents materials a cold balsam is an effective means around general cold symptoms such as coughs, cold and sore throat to lindern. The cold balsam is applied to the skin. The active ingredients are also absorbed through the air we breathe.

The essential oils have an expectorant effect in the bronchi. This effect can be intensified by inhaling the cold balsam. The essential vapors that reach the respiratory tract in this way have a particularly mucolytic and calming effect.

This is felt by the patients as very pleasant. In the nose, too, the cold balsam ensures that irritated nasal mucous membranes swell away. One can breathe more freely again. Menthol is often also a component of the cold balm. This has an antibacterial and disinfecting effect.
