Bamipin

Products

Bamipin is commercially available in Germany and Austria as a gel for topical use (Soventol). The drug is not registered in many countries.

Structure and properties

Bamipin (C19H24N2, Mr = 280.4 g/mol) is a piperidineamine derivative. In the drug product, it is present as racemate and bamipine lactate.

Effects

Bamipin (ATC D04AA15) has antihistamine, antipruritic, antidepressant, and antiallergic properties. The effects are due to antagonism at histamine H1 receptors.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of insect bites.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The gel is applied thinly or lightly massaged several times a day.

Contraindications

Bamipin is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity and during pregnancy and lactation. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions have not been reported to date.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions and a mild burning sensation after application. Cutaneous absorption is possible with large-area administration and may result in central nervous side effects such as fatigue.
