Barleycorn, Hordeolum: Causes

Pathogenesis (development of disease)

A hordeolum (sty) is a purulent inflammation of the eyelid glands. In a hordeolum externum, the pus erupts externally and the minor glands (sweat glands) or Zeis glands (sebaceous glands) are affected. In the case of a hordeolum internum, the pus breakthrough occurs inward, and here the meibomian glands (sebaceous glands at the eyelid margin) are infected. Hordeolum is usually caused by staphylococcal infection (Staphylococcus aureus in 90-95% of all cases), rarely by streptococcal infection.

Etiology (Causes)
