Basal Cell Carcinoma: Radiotherapy

For basal cell carcinoma (basal cell carcinoma), radiotherapy or external radiotherapy (RT) (high-voltage therapy; single dose two to 3 Gy, up to total dose of 60-70 Gy) is given under the following conditions:

  • Mainly in cases of local inoperability (size or location of basal cell carcinoma) or general inoperability.
  • In the case of post-operative microscopic R1 resection (macroscopically, the tumor was removed; however, histopathology shows smaller tumor components in the resection margin) [diagnosis by pathologist].
  • Residual macroscopic tumor (R2 resection/larger, macroscopically visible portions of the tumor could not be resected) [diagnosis by surgeon]
  • Postoperative recurrence (recurrence of the tumor) and an in sano resection (R0 resection: removal of the tumor in healthy; in histopathology, no tumor tissue is detectable in the resection margin) is unlikely

Prognosis: cure rates between 92 and 96%.
