Behavior during radiotherapy

Depending on the irradiated body region, some measures should be taken to alleviate or prevent possible side effects. In general, the skin in the areas to be irradiated should be manipulated as little as possible. Some clinics have a general ban on washing during the therapy period.

In the end, however, clear water and a perfume-free soap has no negative influence on possible skin reactions. In general, follow the recommendations of your therapy facility. The use of powders free of active ingredients is advantageous.

On the one hand, the powder cools the skin and is therefore pleasant. On the other hand, sweat is absorbed by the powder and thus prevents the markings from being blurred by clothing. If stronger reactions of the skin occur in the course of the therapy, further measures will be necessary (e.g. disinfectant solutions, ointments, etc.)

The mucous membrane of the mouth and throat is very sensitive. Radiation therapy in this region often leads to inflammation and painful swallowing difficulties. Bacteria and fungi like to settle there and intensify the symptoms.

This problem can be prevented by meticulous oral hygiene with disinfectant mouthwashes (e.g. iodine solutions). In order to prevent radiation caries, teeth should be cleaned before the start of treatment, if possible. Pre-damaged teeth are removed if they cannot be finally treated with small fillings.

Irradiation of the thorax In the case of lung tumors or esophageal tumors, the mucous membrane of the esophagus is exposed to radiation. This can lead to painful swallowing difficulties in the course of therapy. Abdomen/pelvic area If the stomach is in the radiation field, nausea may occur.

The intestinal mucosa reacts with diarrhea and the urinary bladder may develop symptoms of cystitis. This means that you have to urinate more often than usual and you may feel a burning sensation when passing water. If you experience such symptoms, you must inform your doctor immediately so that the appropriate measures can be taken.
