Belching: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of belching.

Family history

  • Are there any gastrointestinal diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long have you had belching?
  • What other symptoms have you noticed?
    • Feeling of pressure in the stomach
    • Cramping abdominal pain
    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Feeling of fullness
  • When (in what situations) do the symptoms occur?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat quickly?
  • Has your appetite changed?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars, or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink carbonated beverages (e.g., sodas).
  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.
