Benzoxonium chloride is commercially available in the form of sprays, as a solution, and lozenges (e.g., Merfen with chlorhexidine). Usually, these are combination preparations.

Structure and properties

Benzoxonium chloride (C23H42ClNO2, Mr = 400.0 g/mol) is a quaternary ammonium compound.

Effects

Benzoxonium chloride (ATC A01AB14, ATC D08AJ05) has antiseptic properties against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When administered orally, it is virtually unabsorbed.

Indications

For disinfection, e.g., inflammation of the mouth and throat, abrasions, and minor skin injuries.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity, also to other quaternary ammonium compounds.
